Family Medicine

What is Family Medicine?

Family medicine provides complete healthcare for people of all ages. Family medicine physicians, also known as primary care doctors or general practitioners, are trained to prevent, diagnose, and treat medical issues throughout your life. Rather than just treating a single symptom, family medicine focuses on your overall well-being within the context of your family and community.

What is a Family Medicine Physician, Primary Care Doctor or General Practitioner?

A family medicine physician, primary care doctor or general practitioner manages your overall health and medical history. They provide annual exams, preventive care, treat long-term illnesses, and refer you to specialists when needed. There are several types of primary care providers.  The best one to choose depends on your age, gender, and specific health needs:

  • Family medicine providers care for patients of all ages, from newborns to seniors.
  • Geriatricians specialize in the care of older adults ages 65 and up.
  • Internal medicine providers focus on adult health.
  • Nurse practitioners and physician assistants are trained to diagnose and treat common health conditions and can prescribe medications often by collaborating with doctors.
  • Obstetrician-gynecologists (OB/GYNs) treat women’s health, including reproductive health.
  • Pediatricians provide care for children, from newborns up to age 18 to 21.
